Even Jests Lodge Within Dosu

농담 한마디도 천지의 도수

One day in February 1908 (DG 38),

무신(戊申：道紀 38, 1908)년 2월에

while Sangjenim was on a journey with the disciples,

성도들을 데리고 어디를 가실 때

they passed by the edge of a barley field.

보리밭 가를 지나시는데

The disciples conversed with one another.

성도들이 서로 말하기를

“The vast disparity between the rich and the poor makes barley,

“이 세상에 빈부의 차별로 인하여

which is unpleasant to eat, the sole staple of the poor.

곡식 중에 오직 먹기 어려운 보리가 빈민의 양식이 되어

Feeding on barley is a perpetual misery for the poor,

먹을 때에 항상 괴로움을 느끼니,

so barley should therefore be eliminated entirely to end discrimination in sustenance.”

보리를 없애 버려야 먹는 데 차별이 없이 일치하리라.” 하거늘

Hearing this, Sangjenim said,

상제님께서 들으시고 말씀하시기를

“Your words seem reasonable. Let there be no barley.”

“너희들의 말이 유리(有理)하니 보리를 없애 버리자.”

He then drew a talisman and burned it.

하시고 부(符)를 그려 불사르시더니

In April, a devastating drought began shriveling the barley crop,

4월에 크게 가물어 보리가 다 말라 죽으매

and farmers started to panic.

농민들이 크게 소동하니라.

The disciples informed Sangjenim of this,

이에 성도들이 이 일을 아뢰며

adding, “If a barley famine strikes, many people will die of starvation.”

이제 만일 보리 흉년이 들면 “ 굶어 죽는 자가 많을 것입니다.” 하거늘

Sangjenim rebuked the disciples.

상제님께서 꾸짖어 말씀하시기를

“In the past, you insisted that it would be just to eliminate barley,

“전에는 너희들이 ‘보리를 없애 버림이 옳다.’

but now you implore me to avert a barley famine!

하고는 이제 다시 보리 흉년을 호소하느냐!

In my work, even jests lodge within dosu

나의 일은 비록 농담 한마디라도 도수에 박혀

and resound throughout heaven and earth, so henceforth never speak carelessly.”

천지에 울려 나가나니 이 뒤로는 모든 일에 실없는 말을 삼가라.” 하시니라.

Sangjenim then went to Yongmeorigogae Hill and commanded Gim Nak-beom,

이어 전주 용머리고개에 가시어 김낙범(金洛範)에게

“Bring me a bowl of cooked barley and a large bowl of soybean paste soup.”

“거친 보리밥 한 그릇과 된장국 한 사발을 가져오라.” 하시고

Afterward, he proclaimed, “Such is the food of the poor,”

“궁민의 음식이 이러하리라.” 하시며

then stirred the barley into the soup and consumed it all.

된장국에 밥을 말아서 다 드시니

Dark clouds immediately formed, and a downpour of rain began.

문득 검은 구름이 일며 비가 내리거늘

The barley crop revived and eventually yielded a plentiful harvest.

보리가 다시 생기를 얻어 풍작을 이루니라.
