1 Sangjenim one day declared to the disciples, “The union of husband and wife is the starting point of the dao of humanity and the root of all blessings.

상제님께서 하루는 성도들에게 말씀하시기를 “부부란 인도(人道)의 시작이요 만복(萬福)의 근원이니라.

2 Therefore, when a husband and wife base their family upon harmony, it has repercussions for the entire world;

그러므로 한 남편과 아내가 복으로써 일가를 이룸이 천하에 미치는 영향이 막대하고

3 when a husband and wife base their family upon discord, this too has repercussions for the entire world.

화(禍)로써 한 가정을 이룸이 천하에 미치는 영향이 막대하니라.

4 “In the Early Heaven, people obeyed their parents and married without knowing anything about their spouses’ characters or even first looking upon their spouses’ faces, and this fostered all forms of bane.

얼굴도 모르고 마음도 모른 채 부모의 명에 따라야 하는 것이 선천의 혼인이었나니 이로 인해 온갖 악폐가 함께 생겨났느니라.

5 In the coming world, women will be able to choose the man they will marry.

앞 세상에는 여자도 제 짝은 제가 골라 시집가게 하리라.

6 “If a man and woman wish to marry, they must seek their parents’ blessing. After their parents give their blessing, the couple must express to me with utmost reverence their desire to marry and vow to love one another, ask me to grant their hopes and wishes,

남녀가 마음이 맞으면 부모에게 허락을 청하고 부모가 승낙하거든 나에게 공경을 다해 고하여 두 사람의 마음을 맹세하고 소망을 기원하며

7 and pledge to observe utmost filial piety to repay their parents for giving them life and raising them. After this, the man and woman become husband and wife, and they will be faithful to one another all their lives.”

그 부모에게 효도를 다해 낳아서 길러 준 공덕에 보답할 것을 서약하여 부부가 되나니 그 부부는 종신토록 변치 않느니라.” 하시니라.
