1 One day in 1908 (DG 38), Sangjenim declared, “A fireplace and a mouth are one and the same.

무신(戊申: 道紀 38, 1908)년에 하루는 상제님께서 말씀하시기를 “아궁이와 입은 한가지니라.

2 Everything that is cultivated by heaven and earth goes into the mouth, so among the many holes in the world, the mouth is the greatest.

천지에서 농사를 지어 입으로 다 들어가나니 천하에 여러 구멍이 많다 해도 입구멍이 제일 크니라.

3 It is akin to a fireplace, which can consume every tree on a mountain, no matter how high and forested.

산이 높아 나무가 아무리 많다 해도 아궁이로 다 들어가는 것과 같은 이치니라.

4 “You come into the world empty-handed and leave it empty-handed,

사람이 태어날 적에 빈주먹으로 오고, 죽을 적에도 빈주먹으로 가나니

5 and if you do not partake of the bounties of the world during your lifetime, it is due to your own foolishness.”

살아생전에 먹을 것을 두고도 못 먹는 것은 제가 어리석은 탓이니라.” 하시니라.

덕만 붙이면

6 Choe Nae-gyeong’s son, suffering from poverty, considered enlisting in the auxiliary troops of the military police as a livelihood.

최내경(崔乃敬)의 아들이 가난하여 헌병 보조원으로 들어가 생계를 얻고자 하여 상제님께 아뢰니

7 When Nae-gyeong asked Sangjenim about this, he replied, “What matters is that virtue is attached to the muzzle of the gun or the tip of the sword.”

이르시기를 “총끝이나 칼끝이나 덕(德)만 붙이면 관계없느니라.” 하시니라.

8 Sangjenim also said, “Even for thieves, sharing becomes a virtue, so some of them might survive ruination.”

또 말씀하시기를 "도둑질하는 자도 나누어 먹은 것이 덕이 되어 혹 살아남는 자도 있느니라." 하시니라.
