1 Sangjenim said to the disciples, “Long ago, a man yearned to learn the ways of Immortalism, and so he wandered in search of a master.

상제님께서 성도들에게 말씀하시기를 “옛적에 어떤 사람이 선술(仙術)을 배우기 위하여 스승을 찾으려고 돌아다니더니

2 Finally, a certain master consented to instruct him, demanding as he did so, ‘You must first prove your devotion for ten years.’

어떤 사람이 선술 가르쳐 주기를 허락하며 ‘십 년 동안의 성의를 보이라.’ 하므로

3 So, the man lived as a farmhand, devoting all his heart and strength to working his master’s land.

그 사람이 머슴살이로 진심갈력(盡心竭力)하여 그 집 농사에 힘썼느니라.

4 “When the ten years had passed, the master praised the man’s sincerity and devotion and announced, ‘I will now teach you the ways of Immortalism.’
10년이 찬 뒤에 주인이 그 성의를 칭찬하며 ‘선술을 가르쳐 주리라.’ 하고

5 With this, the master led him to a nearby pond and commanded, ‘Climb up this willow tree and out onto a branch above the pond, then leap into the water. Thus will you become enlightened into the ways of Immortalism.’

그 부근에 있는 연못에 데리고 가서 이르기를 ‘물 위로 뻗은 버들가지에 올라가서 물로 뛰어내리면 선술을 통하게 되리라.’ 하거늘

6 “His faith in his master’s words firm, the farmhand climbed the willow and leapt from the branch.

머슴이 그 말을 믿고 나뭇가지에 올라가 물로 뛰어내리니

7 In the instant before he would have plunged into the water, clouds of every hue swirled around him to the accompaniment of celestial music, and a shining imperial chariot swept him away to heaven.

미처 떨어지기 전에 뜻밖에도 오색 구름이 모여들고 선악 소리가 들리며, 찬란한 보련(寶輦)이 나타나서 그 몸을 태우고 천상으로 올라갔다 하였나니

8 “Was this attainment due to the dao mastery of the master or due to the practitioner’s own sincerity and devotion?

이것이 그 주인의 도술로 인함이랴, 학인(學人)의 성의로 인함이랴.

9 Contemplate this story well.”

이 일을 잘 해석하여 보라.” 하시니라.
