천지의 근본은 나의 도심주

1 하루는 성도 여러 명을 둘러앉히시고 말씀하시기를 “천지집을 지으려면 기둥이 튼튼해야 하겠는데 무슨 기둥이 제일 단단하겠는가, 잘 생각해서 말들 해 보아라.” 하시니

2 성도들이 저마다 “소나무 기둥입니다.”, “참나무 기둥입니다.”, “대추나무 기둥입니다.”, “돌기둥입니다.”, “쇠기둥입니다.” 하고 아뢰거늘

3 상제님께서는 그 때마다 “그것 참 좋지.”, “참나무가 참 단단할 거여.”, “그것 참 잘 생각했다.”, “옳지, 그렇겠다.”, “그럴 일이다. 쇠기둥이 오죽 단단하겠느냐.” 하시니라.

4 이때 한 성도가 느닷없이 “도심주(道心柱)도 기둥입니까?” 하고 여쭈니

5 상제님께서 물어 말씀하시기를 “너는 어찌 도심주 생각이 나느냐?” 하시고 “그렇지 그럴 일이여. 그렇고말고.

6 도심주를 복중(腹中)에서 턱밑에까지 단단히 받쳐 놓으면 아무리 요동해도 꿈쩍도 아니하며

7 도끼로도 못 찍고 짜구로도 못 깎고, 썩지도 않고 불로도 못 태우고 벼락이라도 못 때릴 터이니 부디 도심주를 잘 가지라.

8 천지집을 지으려면 기둥이 완전히 서야 천지공사가 무궁하리라.” 하시니라.

The Pillar of Dao Mind

1 One day, Sangjenim had several disciples seated in a circle, then he asked, “The pillars used in building the house of heaven and earth should be stalwart. What sort of pillar would be the most sturdy? Consider this carefully, then tell me your answer.”

2 The disciples answered in succession, “One made of pine.” “One made of oak.” “One made of jujube tree.” “One made of stone.” “One made of iron.”

3 Sangjenim responded to each such suggestion, “That is a good material.” “Oak is certainly very sturdy.” “That is a fine idea.” “Yes, that seems correct.” “That is true, an iron pillar is undoubtedly sturdy.”

4 Gim Tae-jun abruptly asked, “Can a pillar of dao mind be considered a pillar?”

5 “How did you chance to conceive of a pillar of dao mind?” asked Sangjenim. “That is it. That is it, indeed.

6 Once the pillar of dao mind is firmly lodged between the stomach and the chin, it will not budge no matter how hard it is shaken.

7 It cannot be hewn by an axe, chipped by a scraper, decomposed by time, burned by flame, or struck down by lightning. You must indeed keep the pillar of dao mind firmly within you.

8 If you are to raise up the house of heaven and earth, its pillars must all stand straight and firm—only then will the Work of Renewing Heaven and Earth truly be boundless and eternal.” (EnglishDojeon 8:38)
