그날로 상제님을 따르니라

Gim Gyeong-hak Follows Sangjenim

During a period in which Sangjenim resided at Gim Gyeong-hak’s house in Baegam-ri Village,

상제님께서 백암리 김경학의 집에 계실 때

Sangjenim one day quietly summoned Gyeong-hak to his room and, with an expression of marked solemnity, asked,

하루는 경학을 조용히 방 안으로 부르시어 사뭇 진지한 표정으로 물으시기를

“Gyeong-hak, what is the extent of your wealth?”

“경학아, 네 재산이 얼마나 되느냐?” 하시니

“It amounts to about three hundred seok,” Gyeong-hak answered.

경학이 “한 삼백 석 거리는 됩니다.” 하고 대답하거늘

“If your wealth is extensive, your mind will be distracted by money

말씀하시기를 “돈이 많으면 돈에 정신이 팔려

and you will not believe in my dao,” said Sangjenim.

나의 도를 믿지 않게 되나니

“If you wish to follow me, you must first be ruined and only then enter the path of my dao.”

나를 좇으려면 먼저 망하고 들어서야 하느니라.” 하시니라.

Firmly resolved, Gyeong-hak sold all of his rice fields,which had a yield of three hundred seok,

이에 경학이 작심하여 삼백 석지기 논을 팔아

and submitted the money as an offering to Sangjenim.

성금으로 바치고,

From that day onward, Gyeong-hak devoted himself entirely to following Sangjenim.
