1 On July 1, Jeung-san’s fifteenth day of meditation at Daewonsa Temple, he ceased to eat and drink and began to meditate with one mind without so much as rising from the spot upon which he sat. Seven days passed so.

증산께서 대원사에 가신 지 보름 만인 7월 초하루부터 식음을 전폐하시고, 한번 앉으신 자리를 잠시도 떠나지 않으신 채 이레 동안 수도에만 일심하시니라.

2 On July 7, 1901, Jeung-san’s twenty-first day of meditation at the Seven Stars Shrine of the temple, thunder roared, the earth shook, and an auspicious rain cascaded down.

대원사 칠성각에서 공부하신 지 스무하루 만인 신축년 7월 7일에 천둥과 지진이 크게 일어나고 상서로운 큰비가 쏟아지는 가운데

3 Amidst these portents, Jeung-san flung open heaven and earth’s great gate of the spirit realm using his supreme dao.

무상의 대도로 천지대신문(天地大神門)을 여시니

4 From this time forth, he wielded supreme authority over the three realms, exercising the universe’s power of creation-transformation at will.

이로부터 삼계대권(三界大權)을 주재(主宰)하시고 우주의 조화권능을 뜻대로 행하시니라.

The Instant of Jeung-san’s Opening of the Gate of Ultimate Enlightenment for the New Heaven and Earth

신천지 도통문을 여실 때

5 In the depths of night, before Jeung-san had attained enlightenment, he had commanded Geum-gok, “Cross the mountain to Geumsansa Temple and keep vigil at the Maitreya Shrine.”

도통하시기 전날 깊은 밤에 증산께서 금곡에게 명하여 “산 너머 금산사에 가서 미륵전(彌勒殿)을 지키라.” 하시거늘

6 As the monk left Daewonsa Temple, he beheld a blazing pillar of fire descending from the sky to the roof of the Seven Stars Shrine.

금곡이 대원사를 떠날 때 보니 찬란한 불기둥이 하늘로부터 칠성각 지붕으로 내리뻗쳐 있더라.

7 As Geum-gok kept vigil in the Maitreya Shrine, heaven and earth suddenly shook so violently that it seemed certain the statue and shrine would collapse.

미륵전을 지키고 있을 때, 갑자기 천지가 진동하여 미륵불과 미륵전이 무너질 듯 크게 흔들리니

8 Overcome with fear, the monk could barely maintain consciousness and control of his body, forcing him to cling to a shrine pillar, yet he found himself in a state of rapture.

금곡이 두려워 정신을 차릴 수 없고 몸조차 가눌 수 없어 미륵전 기둥을 잡고 견디는데 오히려 기분은 황홀하여지더라.

9 At daybreak, Geum-gok returned to Daewonsa Temple and related to Jeung-san the events of the night. As he did so, Geum-gok realized that these events had occurred at the instant of Jeung-san’s attainment of ultimate enlightenment.

날이 밝자 금곡이 대원사로 돌아와 간밤의 일을 아뢴즉 그 때가 바로 증산께서 도를 통하신 시각이더라.

I Am Okhwang-Sangje

나는 옥황상제니라

10 Sangjenim then said to Geum-gok,“Bring me a bowl of rice gruel.” After finishing the gruel , Sangjenim asked,

상제님께서 금곡에게 “미음 한 그릇을 가지고 오라.” 하시니 금곡이 올리매 다 드시고 나서

11 “Geum-gok! The heaven and earth—to whom do they belong?” Geum-gok hesitated, uncertain how to answer.

“금곡아! 이 천지가 뉘 천지인고?” 하시거늘 금곡이 답할 바를 몰라 머뭇거리니

12 Sangjenim proclaimed in a voice thunderous, “Heaven and earth belong to me! I am Okhwang-Sangje!”and he roared with laughter.

상제님께서 천둥 같은 음성으로 “내 천지로다! 나는 옥황상제(玉皇上帝)니라.” 하시고 크게 웃으시니라.

13 At that moment, Geum-gok beheld that the entire room was shining as brightly as at midday and Sangjenim’s countenance was blazing as radiantly as the sun. Geum-gok unconsciously pressed his hands together in prayer and prostrated himself before Sangjenim.

이 때 금곡이 보니 방안이 대낮처럼 환하고 상제님의 용안(龍顔)이 해와 같이 빛나시는지라 저도 모르게 합장 부복하니라.
