1 Sangjenim one day asked the disciples, “Choe Su-un entreats me to proclaim the teachings through the Sicheonjuju Mantra, while Gim Gyeong-so entreats me to proclaim the teachings through the Taeeulju Mantra, which embodies his fifty-year practice. Which mantra do you think it wise to use in spreading the teachings?”

하루는 성도들에게 물으시기를 “최수운은 시천주주로 포교해 달라 하고, 김경수는 50년 공부 태을주로 포교하여 달라 하니 어떤 주문으로 포교함이 좋겠느냐?” 하시거늘

2 Gwang-chan answered, “Please dispose of this matter as you see fit.”

광찬이 대답하기를 “당신님 처분대로 하옵소서.” 하니라.

3 Thus, Sangjenim proclaimed, “The Sicheonjuju Mantra gave rise to the Eastern Learning Revolt of 1894, so that mantra cannot be used to transmit the teachings. Proclaim the teachings through the Taeeulju Mantra. Each of you must convey the teachings to one thousand people.”

이에 말씀하시기를 “시천주주는 갑오동학란을 일으켰으니 전하지 못할 것이요, 태을주로 포교하라. 포교는 매인이 천 명씩 하라.” 하시니

4 Though all other disciples declared that this lay beyond their ability, Hyeong-ryeol and Ja-hyeon replied, “We will do so.”

성도들이 모두 전하지 못 하겠다 하였으나 형렬과 자현 두 사람만은 “전하겠습니다.” 하고 대답하매

5 “Disseminating the teachings is not difficult,” Sangjenim said. “First, you convey the teachings to seven people, and then each of these seven conveys the teachings to seven others. One thousand people may seem like many, but once you have begun, your task is a simple one.”

말씀하시기를 “전하기 쉬우니라. 먼저 7인에게 전한 후에 매인이 7인씩 전하면 천 명이 많은 것 같아도 시작하면 쉬우니라.” 하시니라.

6 Sangjenim also declared, “Only through the Taeeulju Mantra can you proclaim the teachings throughout the world and bring salvation to its people.

상제님께서 말씀하시기를 “태을주라야 포덕천하(布德天下) 광제창생(廣濟蒼生) 하느니라.

7 The practice of chanting the Taeeulju Mantra is the practice of governing the world.”

태을주 공부가 치천하(治天下) 공부니라.” 하시니라.
