1 In August 1905 (DG 35), Sangjenim had the disciples sit before him in rows and announced to them that he would read them a poem he had written in childhood.

을사(乙巳 : 道紀 35, 1905)년 8월에 하루는 성도들을 줄지어 앉히시고 어렸을 때 지은 글이라 하시며

2 “Compose yourselves with a right mind,” he commanded. Sangjenim then recited:

“정심(正心)으로 삼가라.” 하시고 글을 외워 주시니 이러하니라.

3 When a mighty stone must be brought hither, how can the mountain be considered too distant?

A well-crafted club is used to shape the world, so now must be the autumn of an old tree!

운래중석하산원(運來重石何山遠)이오 장득척추고목추(粧得尺椎古木秋)라

무거운 돌을 운반하여 옴에 어찌 산이 멀다 하리오. 잘 깎은 방망이로 세상을 다듬질하니 고목 된 가을이구나!

4 “Is this not the civilization of teachers?” Sangjenim said. “Pray in your hearts and receive these verses,” Sangjenim commanded, and all the disciples prayed in their hearts and received the verses.

“이는 선생문명(先生文明) 아닐런가.” 하시고 “이 글을 심고하고 받으라.” 명하시므로 모든 성도들이 심고하고 받으니라.

5 Sangjenim continued:

In an ethereal garden covered with frost blooms an immaculate chrysanthemum.

A verdant mountain becomes bony rock, so now must be the autumn of fallen foliage!

이어서 말씀하시기를

상심현포청한국(霜心玄圃淸寒菊)이여 석골청산수락추(石骨靑山瘦落秋)라

서리 내린 현포(玄圃)에 핀 맑은 국화여 바위가 드러난 청산은 낙엽 진 가을이구나!

6 “Is this not the civilization of ancestors?” Sangjenim said. “Pray in your hearts and receive these verses,” Sangjenim commanded, and all the disciples prayed in their hearts and received the verses.

 “이는 선령문명(先靈文明) 아닐런가.” 하시고 “이 글을 심고하고 받으라.” 명하시므로 모든 성도들이 심고하고 받으니라.

7 Sangjenim continued:

Crossing a lake of one thousand ri, a solitary rowing seems endless.

The qi of spring in all lands brims in a single bamboo basket!

또 말씀하시기를

천리호정고도원(千里湖程孤棹遠)이요 만방춘기일광원(萬邦春氣一筐圓)이라

천리나 되는 호수길 외로운 배질 아득하고 온 천하의 봄기운 한 광주리에 가득하도다!

8 “Is this not the civilization of sovereigns?” Sangjenim said. “Pray in your hearts and receive these verses,” Sangjenim commanded, and all the disciples prayed in their hearts and received the verses.

“이는 선왕문명(先王文明) 아닐런가.” 하시고 “이 글을 심고하고 받으라.” 명하시므로 모든 성도들이 심고하고 받으니라. 

9 Sangjenim continued:

Seasonal flowers bloom radiantly in the March rain.

Pungnyu wine washes away a hundred years’ dust.

다시 말씀하시기를

시절화명삼월우(時節花明三月雨)요 풍류주세백년진(風流酒洗百年塵)이라

철 꽃은 내 도덕의 삼월 비에 밝게 피고 온 세상의 백년 티끌 내 무극대도의 풍류주로 씻노라.

10 “Is this not the civilization in which the virtues of teachers, ancestors, and sovereigns are united into one?” Sangjenim said. “Pray in your hearts and receive these verses,” Sangjenim commanded, and all the disciples prayed in their hearts and received the verses.

“이는 선생선령선왕(先生先靈先王) 합덕문명(合德文明) 아닐런가.” 하시고 “이 글을 심고하고 받으라.” 명하시므로 모든 성도들이 심고하고 받으니라.

11 Sangjenim continued:

Who could understand me, one who has endured an odyssey of hardships?

I float and revel on the cosmic sea of creation-transformation, and my face is revealed.

I spread love ten thousand ri, and all mountains and rivers become my friends.

I bestow virtue throughout heaven and earth, and the sun and moon become my companions.

다시 말씀하시기를

풍상열력수지기(風霜閱歷誰知己)오 호해부유아득안(湖海浮遊我得顔)이라

구정만리산하우(驅情萬里山河友)요 공덕천문일월처(供德千門日月妻)라

만고풍상의 고난을 다 겪은 나를 누가 능히 알리오. 저 우주의 조화 바다에 떠서 노니 내 얼굴이 드러나는구나.

정을 만리에 모니 산하가 내 벗이 되고 덕을 천지에 베푸니 일월이 내 짝이 되는구나.

12 “Is this not for us the autumn, in which humans fulfill the will of heaven and earth?” Sangjenim said. “Pray in your hearts and receive these verses,” Sangjenim commanded, and all the disciples prayed in their hearts and received the verses.

“이는 우리들의 득의지추(得意之秋)가 아닐런가.” 하시고 “이 글을 심고하고 받으라.” 하시므로 모든 성도들이 심고하고 받으니라.
