Sangjenim Bestows the Great Dao of Cultivating and Purifying the Mind 

That Leads to Enlightenment

[성구 읽기] 의미 단위로 띄어 읽기

One day in June 1908, Shin Gyeong-won, who lived in Taein, 

무신년 6월 어느 날 태인에 사는 신경원(辛京元)이 

sent someone to Sangjenim with an urgent message, 

급히 사람을 보내어 상제님께 아뢰기를 

“Lately, there has been an overbearing police investigation,

“경관의 조사가 심하여

and they have come to my house every day demanding to know your whereabouts.”

날마다 제 집에 와서 선생님의 주소를 묻습니다.”하니

“Why did you delay in bringing me such an urgent message?” 

상제님께서 심부름 온 사람에게 물어 말씀하시기를

Sangjenim demanded of the messenger.

“급한 일로 오면서 도중에 지체하게 된 이유가 무엇이냐?” 하시거늘

“Please forgive me! I stopped to watch a fortuneteller who was prognosticating with 

the Book of Change.”

그 사람이 대답하여 아뢰기를 “길에서 주역(周易)으로 운명을 보는 자가 있어 구경하다 늦었사오니 용  

서하옵소서 !” 하니라.

Sangjenim wrote a reply and ordered the messenger, 

이에 상제님께서 글을 써 주시며 말씀하시기를

“Give Gyeong-won this writing. 

“이 글을 경원에게 전하여

Tell him to read it once and then immediately burn it.” On the paper was written:

한 번 읽고 곧 불사르게 하라.” 하시니 그 글은 이러하니라.

If heaven provides meager rain and dew, woes inevitably arise in all lands.

하늘이 비와 이슬을 적게 내리면 반드시 만방에서 원망이 일고

If earth employs meager water and soil in nurturing all life, 

땅이 만물을 기르는데 물과 흙을 박하게 쓰면

woes inevitably arise in all life.

반드시 만물이 원성을 발하며

If people are meager in their spreading of virtue, 

사람이 덕화(德化)가 부족하면

woes inevitably arise in all affairs.

반드시 만사에 원망이 붙느니라.

The provision of rain and dew by heaven,

하늘이 비와 이슬을 내리고

the employment of water and soil by earth,

땅이 물과 흙을 쓰고

the spreading of virtue by people 

사람이 덕화에 힘씀

 —these all depend upon the mind.

모두 마음자리에 달려 있으니

The mind is the hinge, the gate, and the pathway of the spirits.

마음이란 귀신(鬼神)의 문지도리요 드나드는 문호요 오고가는 도로이라.

The spirits open and close the hinge, enter and leave through the gate,

그 문지도리를 여닫고 문호에 드나들고

and come and go along the pathway.

도로를 왕래하는 신이

Sometimes spirits are benevolent, sometimes malevolent.

혹 선하기도 하고 악하기도 하니

If you emulate what is good, and if you reform what is wicked, 

선한 것을 본받고 악한 것을 잘 고치면

your mind—the hinge, the gate, the pathway—

내 마음의 문지도리와 문호와 도로는

will indeed be a fount of creation-transformation greater than heaven and earth.

천지보다 더 큰 조화의 근원이니라.

Upon receiving the writing, Gyeong-won read it and then burned the paper. 

경원이 이 글을 받아 읽은 후에 곧 불사르니

There were no more inquiries by the police from that time forth. 

그 뒤로 경관의 조사가 그치니라.
